I am a Cartographer/Computer Scientist, and considered to be one of the Uber-Geeks at my job with NGA, the happy, friendly face of the Intelligence Community. At the office I seem to be constantly prozletyzing some new technology or another to the people who should be delivering such things. I also buy a lot of computers and software for the Agency. I love my job! (Really!)
I am at the same time a neo-luddite* at home. I don't have a personal laptop, I only relatively recently got a cell phone because pay phones are an endangered species and you can't count on one being at any commercial establishment anymore. For a good year and a half it was hardly ever on, the $20/month no fills, 60 minutes/month plan was more than adequate. More recently I have fallen into bad company and have been corrupted and use it a lot more... I have even looked at getting a personal laptop, but haven't done it yet. In some ways I am spoiled. I can check out a super-spiffy near bleeding edge laptop at work anytime I want, but it would not have wireless for security reasons. Also often times when travelling having a laptop that has the NGA Seal as the wallpaper would be in bad taste. :-)
* As a neo-luddite I am not anti-technology, I am anti-technology that will consume large amounts of time when I could be doing things that will make me healthier, wealthier, or hopefully wiser.
I am also a largely retired event planning junkie - aka a Conrunner. At one time I worked on Science Fiction Conventions and Scottish Games. However after Bucconeer, the 1998 Baltimore WorldCon, I decided I needed to back off before I went insane. Of course now I spend a lot of time with Dance (www.flyingfeet.org) and Yoga (www.pureprana.com). I have also become aware that Conrunning is like Alcoholism - so easy to slip back into the addiction. :-)
